In this episode, Dr. Thomas B. Yee analyses the nationalistic flavors in the second season of Oshi No Ko, which revolves around a 2.5D Stageplay named Tokyo Blade.
GUEST BIO:
Some composers found their love of music hearing Brahms or Beethoven; Thomas (b. 1992) discovered his from the beeps and boops of the Super Nintendo. Thomas composes transformative Holocaust Remembrance opera (Eva and the Angel of Death) and concert pieces remixing live performance with the chiptune aesthetics of retro video game sound worlds. Thomas' research analyzes the representation of gender, race, and religion in video game music and the compositional innovations of Japanese 8-bit era video game composers, with secondary research areas in anime music and music of Japanese theme parks. Thomas is an Associate Professor of Instruction in Theory & Composition at the University of Texas at San Antonio School of Music.

In this episode, Steven will discuss his experience in higher education as a pianist and anime fan. We will also discuss and analyze the arrangements by the YouTuber Animenz and explore how elementary piano students can use Studio Ghibli films to bring storytelling into their performances.
GUEST BIO:
Steven Zhai is a classically trained Canadian pianist. He holds a Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Certificate in Piano Pedagogy and a Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Toronto. He studied with Dr. Megan Chang and was supported by numerous scholarships. Steven also serves as a faculty member and instructor for the University of Toronto (Piano Pedagogy Program), where he mentors the next generation of young pianists. Currently, Steven is working on several research projects and building up his own private piano studio. Upcoming is a piano duet project titled “Lieder and Light,” featuring classical and anime works.

Tan is also a faculty member at the Community School of Music and Arts and maintains a singing private studio. They hold a Master of Music in music theory from McGill University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of Essex, and a Bachelor in Music from the University of Edinburgh, UK.
